As a year-end 2011 project, I decided to upgrade many of our lights to LED -- primarily for energy conservation. This included recessed overhead can lights (kitchen, halls & bathrooms), general illumination lights (LR & BR) and reading lights.
In researching which bulbs would appear to work BEST, I immediatley discovered a wide variety of "ratings" -- especially regarding brightness. From a technical standpoint the amount of light emitted is measured in "lumens" (wattage tells one only how much energy is used, NOT how much light is emitted). And I learned that not all lumens are directionally alike! For instance, many of the bulbs emit light (the measured lumens) ONLY in a "cone pattern" whereas the standard incandescent bulb emits spherically. If the cone pattern uses all the lumens to create a "cone of light" spreading to 4 ft. in diameter, the cone would appear MUCH brighter than if the same lumens illuminated a 4 ft. radius sphere.
Net results:

Best LED bulb around at this time,

I have a bunch of these in service around my house and they're the best replacement I've found for a standard incandescent lamp so far. As an early adopter I paid $40 each for most of them but prices have recently dropped to $25 at Home Depot and will likely fall further as sales pick up. Better color than CFL, zero warmup time to full brightness, and they're not harmed by being switched on and off frequently, something that will kill most CFLs quickly and they contain no mercury so there is no disposal hassle. On top of all that, they work quite well on an ordinary dimmer switch, though the 40W equiv version does better, apparently different electronics inside.
I do wish they offered a choice of color temperatures though. These are 2700K, a very close match to the traditional incandescent bulb, and understandable since this is what they aim to replace. Still, this looks very yellow to me having become accustomed to 3,000K CFL. I'd like to see a 5000-6500K daylight version...Read more

These give a slightly yellow toned light but do light well, equivalent to a 60 watt incandescent. Although not as hot as either a CFL or an incandescent bulb, they do get up to 145 degrees F at their hottest point (the heatsink). This is in an open fixture, ambient room temperature of 68 degrees with the bulb mounted horizontally and after being on for 2 hours. It is still early in the development cycle for LED bulbs so they still need to tune the light output, calm down the temperatures and get the prices far lower but for today, if you really way to go LED, this is one of the better bulbs out there. Note that you won't be saving much electricity over a CFL so the only real financial return over CFls is the hopefully far longer lives of the LED bulbs, which still has yet to be proven in actual use. Just remember, you can spot the pioneers by all the arrows in their backs ;-)
