This is a large light. They recommend using a deep recessed light fixture. However, I'm using it in a lamp where the bulb is semi-exposed past the shade. You get used to it. There is basically no hum from it. It comes on instantly but takes about 30 seconds to reach full intensity from a room temperature start. Trust me, this is a huge benefit. You don't want that thing blasting on right away. It has a high color temp as advertised. So far, so good. Full marks.

I was anxiously looking forward to flipping the light switch, hearing the angels sing, and watching a warm light fill the room. Instead, it looked like I walked into an an old (1950s) refrigerator or was standing under a filling station light pole gassing up my car. The bulb itself was incredibly bright to look at but it seemed that only a small percentage of the light actually left the bulb and came into the room, although it obviously did since it cast long shadows on various objects. Also the light it did give off was stark and cold. Huge bummer. I had ordered it because it was a full spectrum light, assuming full spectrum meant similar to sunlight. After receiving it, I did some research and learned that I should have ordered the "warm" version of the light for my needs - a more friendly cast. Full spectrum 6500 has a blue kind of cast to it. Like, comically large. It's as long as my forearm and sticks out a foot from the aluminum clip lamp I've put it in. I have used this bulb for several months as a light therapy bulb in the winter and to grow some seedlings in the early spring. It lights up quickly, is incredibly bright, does not make noise, and has lasted a long time. If you don't mind how big it is this is a great bulb.
