Fluorescent lamps are phosphorous-coated tubes filled with a low-pressure mercury vapor. Light is produced by passing an electric arc between tungsten cathodes at opposite ends of the tube. This causes the mercury vapor to generate a radiant energy.

I bought these bulbs for the bright white color and they deliver. They work fine in my floor lamp that needed bulbs with a candelabra base. I couldn't find them locally but fortunately Amazon came through. Two bulbs alone light up the entire room pretty well and I don't have to put up with that "soft white" color anymore!
